Kangaroo Valley Weather

Located in southern NSW and nearby to the coast, Kangaroo Valley experiences a temperature range between the high twenties in summer all the way down to single digits in winter. 

Summer in Kangaroo Valley 

From December to February, Kangaroo Valley experiences daily high temperatures averaging between 25°C and 26°C and nighttime lows between 15°C and 16°C. Be sure to pack sunscreen and a hat during this time. Summer is ideal for enjoying canoeing and kayaking. Paddle through beautiful escarpments and discover the amazing array of wildlife. Lake Yarrunga, Bendeela and the Upper Shoalhaven River are all great destinations from the valley.

Or cool off in the waterholes or Kangaroo River which winds its way through beautiful Kangaroo Valley. Word of advice – the river is not warm, and is in fact mostly ice cold!

Spring and autumn in Kangaroo Valley 

Spring and autumn bring the most temperate climate, where the maximum daily temperature sits between a comfortable 20°C and 23°C, while the minimum is between 8°C and 13°C. The transitional seasons are perfect for surveying the native fauna, bush walks and hiking. The ‘Kangaroo Valley Loop’ is one of the Valley’s most popular hiking trails among experienced hikers, campers, and backpackers.  The loop take close to 12 hours to complete and is and 42.8km long. It is not one for the faint-hearted!

Winter in Kangaroo Valley 

From June to August, Kangaroo Valley sees daily highs averaging between 16°C and 17°C and nighttime lows between 6°C and 7°C. While daytime temperatures are moderately cool, windy conditions can make it feel colder, with temperatures sometimes dropping to around to a brisk 11.8°C during the day and 1°C at night. Be sure to pack warm clothing, including a big jacket and a cosy beanie. It is the perfect time to take in the fresh winter air and enjoy some local wine by the outdoor fire pit or warm up by the indoor fireplace.

Explore the local foodie hot spots

If you’re looking for a chance to venture out and explore the local fare, there are plenty of opportunities to do so. In town, you’ll find The General Cafe, where you can indulge in  handmade, fresh dishes that feature locally-sourced ingredients. If you’re more of an on-the-go type, grab a pie from the bakery or an easy pick-me-up from the Hampden Deli. For a lunch or dinner dine-in option, local pub The Friendly Inn features a sunny beer garden and classic menu picks, as well as numerous events throughout the year, such as bonfire night, karaoke and, by day, farmer’s markets. 

Step into nature 

It would be a shame to visit Kangaroo Valley without heading out to explore its gorgeous environment. Kayak and canoe our beautiful Shoalhaven waterways, with Kangaroo Valley Adventure Company, Kangaroo Valley Kayaks or Kangaroo Valley Safaris, or head out on one of the Shoalhaven region’s many nature trails, including Hampden Bridge Bush Loop, Three Views Walking Track, Kangaroo Valley Historic Walk or, for more serious hikers, Griffins Fire Trail.

Visit the Shoalhaven Wine Region 

Scattered around the Shoalhaven region are some of New South Wales’ best wineries – many of them award-winning. The Valley’s volcanic soil means that both red and whites are a specialty, so there’s something for every palate. Must-visits include Yarrawa Estate in Kangaroo Valley, Artemis in Mittagong, Two Figs in Berry, and Lyrebird Organic Winery in Budgong.

Grab dessert on the go

For an afternoon pick-me-up or something to save for later, stop by Valley Fudge & Teahouse, where you’ll find ice cream, stacked milkshakes, donuts, waffles and their famous fudges and brittles. Or, if you’re one for nostalgia, Sweet As Kangaroo Valley offers the charm of a humble, old-school lolly shop – as well as your choice of artisanal gelato, chocolate and, of course, lollies. A ‘must-visit’ destination in you’re visiting Shoalhaven.
